Atlanta Braves: Miller, Braves spoil Billingsley’s return, beat Phillies

The Latest Local News from the Rome News

ATLANTA — Shelby Miller threw his third career shutout, Freddie Freeman and Kelly Johnson hit homers to spoil Chad Billingsley’s first start in more than two years, and the Atlanta Braves beat the Philadelphia Phillies 9-0 on Tuesday night.

Miller (4-1) allowed only three hits and one walk with eight strikeouts. He has not allowed more than two runs in any of his six starts.

Billingsley (0-1) gave up six runs, five earned, in five innings. The right-hander fought back from two major surgeries on his pitching arm to make his first start since April 15, 2013, for the Dodgers against San Diego.

Freeman had three hits, including a two-run homer in the first. Johnson, who drove in four runs, hit a three-run shot in the fourth. He added a sixth-inning single for his 1,000th career hit.

Miller struck out Ryan Howard to complete his first shutout since June 17, 2014, with the Cardinals at Toronto.

Miller faced the minimum 12 batters through four innings. Cesar Hernandez had an infield hit to lead off the third before Carlos Ruiz hit into a double play. Howard led off the fifth with a double, but was stranded on second base.

Johnson leads the Braves with six homers and has 14 RBIs in his last 10 games.

Phillies manager Ryne Sandberg held out slumping second baseman Chase Utley, who is hitting only .103 and is 2 for 29 (.069) on the road trip.

Sandberg said it was “a pretty good possibility” Utley’s break “from the mental side” will continue through Wednesday’s final game of the series. Sandberg said Utley has “hit the ball very hard, right on the nose,” but hasn’t had any luck.

Hernandez started at second base.

Left-hander Elvis Araujo, making his major league debut, pitched around two hits in a scoreless sixth for Philadelphia. Dustin McGowan walked four batters in the seventh, including a bases-loaded walk to Johnson to force in a run. Jace Peterson and Cameron Maybin followed with run-scoring singles.

Trainer’s room

Phillies: Billingsley had to recover from two surgeries on his right arm — a Tommy John procedure followed by a repair of his partially torn flexor tendon on June 24, 2014.

Billingsley, 30, was signed to a one-year deal by the Phillies on Jan. 29.

Braves: The Braves designated left-handed reliever Donnie Veal for assignment before the game and recalled right-hander Brandon Cunniff from Triple-A Gwinnett. The move left Luis Avilan as the only left-hander in Atlanta’s bullpen.

Up next

Phillies: RHP Jerome Williams will try for his second win over the Braves this season. He allowed three runs in a 5-4 win over the Braves in Philadelphia on April 26. He is 2-3 against Atlanta in his career.

Braves: RHP Mike Foltynewicz will try to solidify his spot in Atlanta’s rotation after allowing two earned runs in five innings in a 4-3 win over the Reds on Friday.

Stamp Out Hunger Food Drive will be held Saturday, May 9

The Latest Local News from the Cedartown Standard

The National Association of Letter Carriers (NALC) will conduct its 23 annual nationwide Stamp Out Hunger! Food Drive on Saturday, May 9.

Stamp Out Hunger! is the nation’s largest single-day food drive. Last year, with the help of thousands of volunteers, letter carriers all across America collected more than 74.4 million pounds of non-perishable food – the second-highest amount since the drive began in 1992.

Making a donation is easy. Customers should leave their non-perishable food donations in a bag near their mailbox on Saturday, May 9, before their letter carrier arrives. In the days leading up to the Food Drive, letter carriers will be delivering special bags, along with your mail, that be used to make your donations. Food collected during Saturday’s drive will be delivered to local community food banks and food pantries for distribution.

While all non-perishable donations are welcome, foods that are high in protein such as canned tuna, salmon, beans and peanut butter are most needed. Canned fruits and vegetables, whole grain, low sugar cereals, macaroni and cheese dinners and 100 percent fruit juice also top the list of most needed items.

Oak Hill to showcase exhibition of bird paintings by Athos Menaboni

The Latest Local News from the Rome News

Oak Hill & The Martha Berry Museum will present “Menaboni’s Birds: Georgia’s Own Artist as Naturalist,” an exhibition of 37 paintings by Italian-born Georgia artist Athos Menaboni.

The exhibition will run from May 16 through Sept. 12 in the Berry College museum, located on the estate of Martha Berry, the college’s founder.

Menaboni was born in Italy and spent more than 60 years in Georgia, where he became one of the most beloved and prominent artists of the 20th century. He met Atlanta architect Philip Shutze in the 1920s and was commissioned to paint murals in iconic structures such as Atlanta’s Swan House and Sapelo Island’s R.J. Reynolds estate. Menaboni’s long friendship with Robert W. Woodruff produced many extraordinary works, including murals in Coca-Cola’s corporate jets and four decades of the Woodruff family’s annual Christmas cards.

Best known for his naturalistic oil paintings of birds, Menaboni has been referenced as the 20th century’s heir to John James Audubon. “Menaboni’s Birds: Georgia’s Own Artist as Naturalist” is the first exhibition in more than two decades to focus exclusively upon birds. Featuring 37 paintings from 18 lenders, the exhibition was curated by Russell Clayton, art collector and scholar who, in the last five years of Menaboni’s life, developed a friendship with the artist and his wife, Sara. “Menaboni’s Birds” has been a labor of love for Clayton, who maintains a listserv devoted to Menaboni scholarship.

The majority of the works of art in the exhibition have never been shown in public. While some are on loan from collections such as the Coca-Cola Company and Fernbank Museum of Natural History, most works are from private collections—and after the show ends on Sept. 12, the paintings will return to their owners.

“This is a rare treat to see these magnificent paintings together in the same location,” says Clayton. “We are grateful to the many lenders who have entrusted us with their treasures.”

“Menaboni’s Birds: Georgia’s Own Artist As Naturalist” continues the Berry museum’s commitment to relevant and creative programming.

“We hope that this exhibition will engage the public—not just in Rome, but throughout the Southeast,” says Museum Director Timothy Brown. “The thematic unity of the show is stunning—we’re honored to host such an important and beautiful exhibition at the Martha Berry Museum.”

Oak Hill & The Martha Berry Museum is open Monday through Saturday, 10 a.m. to 5 .p.m. For more information, contact 706-368-6789 or oakhill@berry.edu.

Blood drive will be held in memory of Margaret Statham on Tuesday, May 12

The Latest Local News from the Cedartown Standard

A community blood drive for the American Red Cross will be held from 12:30 to 5:30 p.m. Tuesday, May 12 at the Nathan Dean Center, 604 Goodyear Street in Rockmart.

This event will be held in memory of Mrs. Margaret Mitchell Statham, who passed away on Sunday, March 1, 2015.

She is remembered as a dedicated volunteer with ARC and a person who believed in making a difference in the lives of the people she met.

“Not only was she a joy to be around but loved life so that everyone who knew her was inspired,” said Doris Scott, blood drive coordinator.

Margaret had a passion for helping others and was a compassionate, caring friend, she said.

“I learned the value of donors from personal experience and people like Margaret,” Scott said. “I remember I once needed 5 pints of blood (at Rockmart-Aragon Hospital) and only 1 was available.”

Last year, about 3.1 million volunteer blood donors rolled up a sleeve to help the Red Cross meet the needs of patients at approximately 2,600 hospitals nationwide. Donors of all blood types – especially those with types O negative, A negative and B negative – are needed to help ensure blood is available for patients this spring.

To make an appointment to give blood, download the Red Cross Blood Donor App, visit redcrossblood.org or call 1-800-RED CROSS (1-800-733-2767). Those who are unable to give blood can support blood donations and invite others to make a lifesaving donation by creating a SleevesUp virtual blood drive at http://ift.tt/1v51Pr9.

Donors are remind that a blood donor card or driver’s license or two other forms of identification are required at check-in. Individuals who are 17 years of age (16 with parental consent in some states), weigh at least 110 pounds and are in generally good health may be eligible to donate blood. High school students and other donors 18 years of age and younger also have to meet certain height and weight requirements.

Softball: Berry to open play Friday in NCAA tourney

The Latest Local News from the Rome News

The Berry College softball team has been selected to compete in the NCAA Division III softball championship. The 62-team field was announced Monday morning.

The Vikings earned an at-large bid to the tournament and will open with Averett (34-3-1) — at host Emory — on Friday.

Berry (32-6) has won 13 straight games and captured the Southern Athletic Association regular season and tournament titles.

The SAA does not yet have an automatic qualifier and the Vikings were selected as a pool B team. Emory was the other pool B selection. Emory (31-7) will take on LaGrange (25-14) in the other first-round matchup Friday.

The winner of the Atlanta four-team/double elimination bracket will advance to next weekend’s Super Regionals against the University of Texas at Tyler subregional winner.

“Since we started the program, it’s been a goal to reach the national tournament,” said Vikings’ head coach Cori Thiermann. “We are excited and it’s well-deserved because this team plays hard and with heart. We are peaking at the right time, which is great. And while we are happy to be going to our first regionals, we want to have a great weekend and think we can compete with anyone.”

Atlanta Braves: Braves edged at Turner Field

The Latest Local News from the Rome News

ATLANTA — Alex Wood’s second straight poor start has the young Atlanta left-hander wondering how he can reclaim the form that made his 2014 rookie season a success.

Wood struggled with his command and was pulled in the fifth inning as Jeff Francoeur and the Philadelphia Phillies rolled to a 5-2 victory over the Braves on Monday night. Wood, 24, allowed three runs, nine hits and two walks in 4 1-3 innings.

“His command wasn’t good,” Braves manager Fredi Gonzalez said. “I’m not overly concerned, but that’s not him.”

Wood (1-2) said his sinker and changeup “haven’t been there.” He allowed five runs in five innings in a 13-4 loss to Washington in his last start.

“I’ve got to make an adjustment,” Wood said after his ERA rose to 4.32 with his second straight loss. “It’s a humbling game, to say the least.”

Wood was 11-11 with a 2.78 ERA as a rookie.

Francoeur, who began his career with the Braves, ended his 0-for-19 drought with four hits and drove in two runs.

Francoeur’s family, including his wife, daughter and grandmother, watched as he had a run-scoring double off Wood in Philadelphia’s three-run first inning. He drove in another run with a triple off Jim Johnson in the ninth. He also had two singles.

“Anytime that happens it feels good but obviously in Atlanta, with my family and my daughter here, it was special,” Francoeur said.

Aaron Harang (3-2), who pitched for the Braves last season, allowed five hits and one run in six innings. In two starts against Atlanta this season, Harang has allowed one run and seven hits in 14 innings. He was 12-12 with a career-best 3.57 ERA with Atlanta last season.

Carlos Ruiz had two hits, including a two-run single, and Darrin Ruf had three of the Phillies’ season-high 14 hits.

Harang gave up the run in the sixth when Andrelton Simmons tripled off the wall in center field and scored on Freddie Freeman’s single.

High heat

Phillies manager Ryne Sandberg came out of the dugout in the eighth when an inside pitch from Luis Avilan sent Ben Revere to the ground. The pitch appeared to hit the knob of Revere’s bat.

Revere then took a called third strike to end the inning.

Sandberg said after the game he didn’t know if Avilan was wild or trying to brush back Revere.

Locked in at leadoff

Markakis ended an 0-for-14 slump with a leadoff single in the first, his first of two hits. Markakis hit leadoff for the 10th straight game and appears locked into the spot.

“Of all the options we have, he’s the one who makes the most sense,” Gonzalez said before the game.

Trainer’s room

Phillies: A healthy 1B Ryan Howard was rested from the starting lineup against the left-handed Wood. Howard is hitting .176 against left-handers and .193 overall.

Braves: IF-OF Kelly Johnson was rested after making eight straight starts, leaving the Braves with their 26th different lineup in as many games. Johnson entered the game in left field in the eighth.

Up next

Phillies: RHP Chad Billingsley’s long fight back to the major leagues will end when he comes off the 15-day DL for his first start since April 15, 2013, for the Dodgers against San Diego. Billingsley has come back from two elbow surgeries and was with the Phillies on Monday.

Braves: RHP Shelby Miller (3-1) will try to bounce back from his first loss as he tries for his second win against the Phillies this season. He allowed two runs in six innings in a 5-2 win at Philadelphia on April 25.

Tennis: Shorter to try to defend NCCAA national crown

The Latest Local News from the Rome News

The Shorter women’s tennis team will try to defend its title today at the National Christian College Athletic Association National Tournament in Mobile, Alabama.

“We’re looking forward to it,” said head coach Orville Adams as his team opens play as the No. 1-ranked NCCAA team and is ranked No. 23 in the most recent NCAA Division II poll. “The team enjoys playing in the tournament.”

The team dominated the field at the 2014 tourney when the Lady Hawks didn’t lost a single point, winning all five matches.

This year, however, the team will find some familiar competition when it heads into the eight-team event as two of the teams the Lady Hawks face in the four-team pool are foes they met in 2014. Shorter will face Northwestern (Minn.), this morning and Indiana Wesleyan this afternoon.

The Lady Hawks close out pool play Wednesday, battling to become one of the two teams from that group to advance to the semifinals Thursday. The championship will take place Friday.

Yet those challenges are nothing new to the Lady Hawks as the majority of this year’s team were on that national title squad last year.

Players returning from last year include Ornella Frere (9-7), Samya El Hsissen (12-5), Aurore Beltrando (9-6) and Sicquena Sinclair (11-4).

Agnes Brun (11-1) and Daniela Chipe (8-7) will make their NCCAA debut.

Lindale getting new fitness center

The Latest Local News from the Rome News

Residents of Lindale will notice construction activity soon at the old Family Dollar store in the Piggly Wiggly shopping center at 3140 Maple Road.

Randy Gentry is bringing Lindale Health and Fitness to the old Family Dollar site as he works to beef up the small strip center. Gentry bought the Lindale Piggly Wiggly from longtime owner Spence Millican in July of 2014.

This will be Gentry’s first health and fitness business; however, he does know other Piggly Wiggly operators that have done something similar in empty building’s adjacent to their grocery stores. “I need to get something in that building and I’m just trying to develop the shopping center and help bring some business to the area,” Gentry said.

“I’m going to have tanning beds and also a women’s fitness area for women only,” Gentry said. “It’s also going to have an aerobics and Zumba studio.” Gentry said that he’s planning to have four tanning beds in the center.

“We’ll have a full line of workout equipment,” Gentry said.

His contractors have told him that once the final permits are issued that it should not take long to complete the renovations. He is hoping to be open sometime in July or August.

Pak Mail closing at end of May, owners retiring

The Latest Local News from the Rome News

Larry and Gerri Morrow have revealed plans to retire and close their Pak Mail franchise at 2204 Shorter Ave. on May 29.

Larry Morrow said it was just time to retire. Both he and his wife are in their 60s and have plans to enjoy their retirement years. “I have golf clubs and I love to fish,” Larry Morris said.

Morrow is also retired from Norfolk Southern Railroad and said he has been blessed to have done well in his professional life and be in a position to retire.

The businessman said that when he acquired the Pak Mail franchise 21 years ago, the dynamics of shipping were completely different than they are today.

As part of corporate strategy, Pak Mail is putting more emphasis on light freight and Morrow does not have a loading dock to accommodate that type of shipping. “Parcel freight has been on the demise,” Morrow said. “You’ve got all these major companies that are shipping for free. This past Christmas I would say there weren’t 20 customers who packed gifts up to ship.”

PClock ransomware Targets over 2500 file extensions

Last week, a new variant of the PClock ransomware targeted 2,583 file extensions. PClock is a ransomware that impersonates the infamous CryptoLocker.

Lawyer in Whistleblower Case Claims Police Attempted to Infect His System With Malware

A defense attorney in Arkansas is claiming that the Fort Smith Police Department attempted to infect his system with key loggers and data scrapers. The case is more than a year old. In January 2013, Attorney Matthew Campbell filed a lawsuit on behalf of Fort Smith Police Department employees. According to the affidavit, the police department eventually provided some additional emails, but sent them over on a hard drive they claimed was a scan of one of the relevant officials’ computers. Campbell paid to have an IT professional scan the drive remotely. “Upon receiving the drive, Mr. Geoff Mueller examined it and found four Trojans buried in a subfolder.” The drive included a password stealer, malware software installer, and a command and control malware program designed to take remote control of a machine.

Backblaze has Removed all 3TB Seagate HDDs From Service Due to High failure rates

For the past few years, online backup company Backblaze has published hard drive reliability data on the tens of thousands of hard drives it has put into service. During that time, one drive type has experienced failing rates far above the rest of the industry — a Seagate 3TB model, ST3000DM001. Now, the company has decided to pull that drive from its operations, and published an account of how badly the 3TB Seagate stood up compared to its competition. Backblaze purchased nearly 5000 ST3000DM001 drives in one year. The result was multiple failures beginning in 2013 and continuing through 2014.

Ransomware Hackers Hit Maine Police Central Server

Four police departments in Maine have paid money to cybercriminals after being hit by so-called “ransomware”. Officials say they weighed up their response and decided they had no choice but to pay up.

In most cases, cyber security experts warn against paying such ransoms for three reasons. First, it may mean getting added to a “suckers list” that can be sold on to other criminals. Second, the criminals may not live up to the promise of unlocking the files. Third, if the victim hands over financial details as part of the payment, the criminals may try to steal even more money or sell the details.

Hackers Likely Didn’t View Files

In this case, the ransomware affected a shared server that linked together four police departments and a sheriff’s office. The good news is that it doesn’t appear the hackers were able to access any of the data.

The police department fell victim to the attack and wound up having to pay the ransom thanks to two things. The ransomware appears to have got onto the system after somebody opened a rogue email and clicked on a link that automatically installed the software. The second failure was with a system that was supposed to back up the data. Had that been working, the police could have simply wiped the affected drive and replaced it from the backup. Apparently no one was keeping track of the backups.

Google ‘Find My Phone’

Google’s ability to find and ring your phone or tablet has expanded outside of the Android Device Manager to regular Google search. You can now open up the main Google search page in your browser and type “find my phone” to get a top result of a map that will locate your phone, similar to the way you can use the main search box to see your upcoming flights and other personalized results. You can use the drop-down menu in the top-right corner to switch devices, and hit the “Ring” button in the bottom-left to ring the device.

You can’t lock or erase the phone from this menu, though — you’ll need to click the map to then be forwarded along to the proper Android Device Manager page to do those actions. Still, if you’ve simply misplaced your phone around the house and can’t find it you’re only a few seconds away from having it located and rang with a simple Google search.

Cedar & Smoke takes shape in Cedartown

The Latest Local News from the Cedartown Standard

Cedar and Smoke, the much-anticipated new restaurant under construction on Herbert Street in downtown Cedartown, is slowly wending its way to an opening date in early summer.

Allen Casey, who is the son of the restaurant owners, Jackie and Cindy Casey, will be the new restaurant’s chef. He said Monday that the weather has slowed things down some, but they are still working toward a June opening.

As of Friday morning, the front facade was framed in with large windows looking out of the interior dining area. Elegant features of the original building, including ornately sculpted capitals atop the supporting columns, will remain.

Inside, Andy Marlowe of Tri-County Painting was preparing the floor for a glazed concrete treatment that will resemble Roman slate. The outlines of the outdoor dining area, which will run parallel to the building on the street side, was also coming into focus.

Marlowe said they would give the outdoor dining area the same glazed concrete floor treatment as inside. “It’s going to be a beautiful building,” he said.

The smoker will be placed outside in a screened porch coming off the kitchen and adjacent to the outdoor dining area.

The restaurant cleared three important bureaucratic hurdles this month:

The Cedartown Downtown Association put its stamp of approval on the color scheme of rust brown and a buttery-beige for the exterior portions of the building that will be painted (a large portion of the building will remain brick.)

The Association also approved a $3,000 grant to be used towards restoration of the east and north facades of the restaurant. The facade grants are part of the incentive package the association provides to prospective buyers and restorers of buildings purchased downtown.

Another piece of the puzzle clicked into place for the Caseys earlier this month when the city commission approved a deed allowing the restaurant to use a small grassy strip of land on Herbert Street owned by the city.

The strip of land runs is about 35 feet wide and runs along the length of the side of the building facing Philpot Street. The deeding of the strip to the restaurant will allow for construction of the outdoor dining area.

Atlanta Braves: Leake pitches Reds past Braves

The Latest Local News from the Rome News

ATLANTA — Mike Leake pitched eight strong innings and hit his fifth career home run to help the Cincinnati Reds beat the Atlanta Braves 5-1 on Thursday night.

Todd Frazier, Tucker Barnhart and Billly Hamilton also had solo homers as the Reds won their third straight. Joey Votto had two hits and drove in a run.

Leake (1-1) allowed four baserunners on two hits and two walks, and retired the last 12 batters he faced. The right-hander, who struck out three, threw 62 of 97 pitches for strikes. Leake gave up singles to Nick Markakis in the first and Jace Peterson in the second, and walked Freddie Freeman in the first and Chris Johnson in the fourth.

Cincinnati, which ranks second in the NL with 31 homers, went up 4-0 in the eighth on Frazier’s seventh homer and 5-0 in the ninth on Hamilton’s second.

The Braves have dropped three in a row and eight of 10.

Atlanta starter Shelby Miller (3-1) gave up six hits and three runs — two earned — with three walks and nine strikeouts in seven innings.

It marked the third straight game that the top of the Braves’ rotation struggled. Atlanta’s starters began the night with a 5.11 ERA over their previous 14 games. Miller began the sixth with Hamilton reaching on a passed ball strikeout.

After Zack Cozart singled, Hamilton scored from second on Votto’s RBI single for a 1-0 Reds lead.

Barnhart and Leake had back-to-back homers to make it 3-0 in the seventh.

Frazier homered off Donnie Veal, whose contract was purchased from Triple-A Gwinnett earlier in the day. Hamilton homered off Ian Thomas.

Tony Cingrani pitched the ninth for Cincinnati, allowing Freeman’s RBI double before Jonny Gomes popped up to end the game.

Up next

Reds: Anthony DeSclafani (2-1) will make his fifth start of the season.

Braves: RHP Mike Foltynewicz is expected to get called up from Triple-A Gwinnett and make his Atlanta debut.

RHP Trevor Cahill is still listed as Friday’s starter, but he pitched two innings of relief Wednesday and is 0-3 with a 9.42 ERA.

NFL: Beasley picked by Falcons

The Latest Local News from the Rome News

FLOWERY BRANCH — The Atlanta Falcons selected Clemson defensive end and Adairsville High School graduate Vic Beasley with the No. 8 overall pick in the NFL draft Thursday night, addressing a glaring need on a struggling defense.

Beasley was regarded as perhaps the most explosive edge rusher in the draft.

Atlanta has made improving its defense an offseason priority under new coach Dan Quinn, the former Seattle Seahawks defensive coordinator. Quinn is working closely with general manager Thomas Dimitroff in the draft.

The Falcons gave up the most total yards

and passing yards in 2014. Their 22 sacks were the second-fewest in the league. Defensive end Kroy Biermann led the team with only 4½ sacks. Beasley (6-3, 235) should help improve those numbers. He had 33 sacks in his career to set a Clemson record and was a first-team All-America selection. He had 12 sacks as a senior in 2014.

Beasley was a stand out at Adairsville before heading to Clemson and was a multiple time member of the Rome News-Tribune All-Area Football Team.

The pass rush was a weakness for the Falcons the last two seasons under former coach Mike Smith. The Falcons struggled to replace defensive end John Abraham, who was cut after leading the team with 10 sacks in 2012.

Atlanta has signed free-agent defensive end Adrian Clayborn, who has battled injuries in his career. Clayborn, a first-round pick by Tampa Bay in 2011, played in only one game in 2014 because of a torn biceps. He had a combined 13 sacks in 2011 and 2013, his only full seasons.

Among other offseason free-agent signees were linebackers Brooks Reed, Justin Durant and O’Brien Schofield and tight ends Jacob Tamme and Tony Moeaki. The Falcons could look for more help at linebacker and tight end in the draft.

The Falcons passed on an opportunity to address another glaring need at running back. The team released veteran starting running back Steven Jackson and lost backup Jacquizz Rodgers, who signed with the Bears.

Local favorite Todd Gurley of Georgia, regarded as one of the top running backs in the draft, was taken by the Rams two picks after the Falcons selected Beasley.

Atlanta has eight picks in the draft, including two in the seventh round.

Witness: Chain saw, body parts found in McKinney's house

The Latest Local News from the Cherokee County Herald

Cherokee County District Court Judge Wes Mobley on Thursday, April 30, denied a motion to reduce Murder Suspect Terry McKinney’s bond from the $1 million which is currently in place.

Robert Ray, McKinney’s state appointed defense attorney, argued during preliminary hearings held at the Etowah County Judicial Center that the bond was too high and unconstitutional.

The state argued that because of the heinous nature in which the crime was committed, the current bond was sufficient, according to reports.’

Josh Summerford, commander of the Cherokee County Major Crimes unit, testified that the victim in the case has been identified as Leroy Pete Foster of Cedar Bluff who was reported missing to local authories by family members March 27. Two days later, a citizen called 911 after their dog dragged several body parts onto their property and that is when the Major Crimes Unit became involved, Summerford said.

That following Monday, authorities obtained a warrant to search McKinney’s home on Rocky Ford Point Road in Cedar Bluff. Reports also indicated that the last time Foster was seen alive he was with McKinney.

When investigators searched the homey they found several items, including a metal pan, hand grabber, pants belonging to the victim which all contained blood and human tissue, the victim’s wallet and also a chainsaw along with several body parts found on the second floor of the home, according to Summerford’s testimony.

Investigators obtained video surveillance and a receipt from a store in Rome showing McKinney purchasing the saw, reports said.

Summerford also stated that while McKinney, 63, who is disabled, was in jail, investigators recovered human tissue and blood from his wheelchair, reports said.

When he was interviewed, McKinney admitted to cutting up the victim but said he did not kill him even though the crime took place in his home. The State Medical Examiner recovered what is believed to be a bullet from Foster’s shoulder, reports said.

Judge Mobley ruled that there was sufficient evidence for probable cause and has now bound the case over to the Cherokee County Grand Jury which will be assembled next month, reports said.

For now, McKinney remains in the Etowah County Detention Center.

Hawks, Lady Hawks begin defense of NCCAA National Championships

The Latest Local News from the Rome News

A year ago, they swept the field claiming a pair of National Christian College Athletic Association Track and Field National Championships that was highlighted by some record-setting performances by a few standouts who competed in multiple events.

But when the 2015 NCCAA National Championships return to Barron Stadium on Friday and Saturday, the Shorter Hawks and Lady Hawks will defend their crowns trading the multi-event approach for one that will help keeping them better themselves for what is still ahead.

“It would be great if we could put together another run at the championships,” Shorter head coach Scott Byrd, who has directed the program to 10 national titles and saw the team sweep the Peach Belt Conference crowns last week, said about keeping the crowns in Rome. “But there will be men and women who are coming here to compete and represent some of the finest athletes from all over the country. It’s a strong field.

“This year we want to use this meet to prepare for what’s ahead of us,” he added, noting that now that Shorter is a full NCAA member the team is now able to compete for the first time in the Division II national meet. “Our focus is improving our times, distances and heights in every event. If we do that, then we’ll have a shot at the repeating as NCCAA champs.”

At the 2014 NCCAA meet, the team was buoyed by the efforts produced by two of the program’s best-ever athletes, Lakeisha Spikes and Kirk Wilson, who each dominated the 100 meters and 200 and played a role in Shorter’s 4×100 and 4×400 relays and who not surprisingly were named the events Female and Male Runners of the Meet, respectively.

That pair has since graduated, but Shorter still boasts potent weapons. This time, however, there’s a twist – the number of athletes who compete in multiple events will be fewer, the most notable being Lady Hawk junior standout Ayana Walker.

The first Shorter athlete to win an NCAA Division II national championship, when she won the national indoor 400 title, Walker is the defending NCCAA 400 champion but this year is entered in just the 200, an event in which she is rated as the top NCCAA runner with a time of 23.96 seconds, and as part of the Lady Hawks’ 4×400 relay team.

So, too, will sophomore Jordan Cross begin the meet concentrating on just one event. The NCCAA’s top-rated runner in the 5,000 and 3,000 steeplechase, Cross’ lone appearance this year will be in the steeplechase.

“Knowing what’s ahead,” Byrd said, “we want them stay fresh and have them working on things to help them down the road.”

Still, Shorter enters the NCCAA championships with a long list of performers – the Hawks’ and Lady Hawks’ relay teams enter the meet with top times – who can contribute to the teams’ point totals.

Lady Hawks Ashley Ballard and Jasmine Crump are considered contenders in the 200 and 400, as is Kryslynn Davidson in the 100 hurdles and Cynia Clark in the hammer throw and shot put for the Lady Hawks, who will dress out 17 athletes for the meet.

The Hawks boast a plethora of possible point producers as well as Gregory Roachford, Jr. has the top time in the 400, Supun Randeniya leads the 110 hurdles field, Wake Roberds holds the top spot in the 400 and Daniel Alexis is poised to make noise in the discus and hammer throw after being named as the Peach Belt Conference’s Men’s Field Athlete of the Year.

“The Peach Belt is a solid conference and what we did in the PBC meet will help us this week,” Byrd said.

Among the teams looking to end Shorter’s national reign includes Bethel, which respectively finished second and fourth in the men’s and women’s final standings last year; Indiana Wesleyan’s women, a third-place finisher in 2014; and Greenville’s men, which was fourth a year ago.

A pair Peach Belt Conference members joins Shorter in the field, Lee and Mississippi College, while Lone Star Conference member McMurry University returns to the meet after taking last year off.

The championship opens Friday morning at 8:30 a.m. when the decathlon and heptathlon competition starts and at 2:30 p.m. the field events – the throw events will be held at the Riverside Parkway Throws Center – and the running preliminaries begin. The day concludes with the finals of the 10,000 and 4×800 relay starting at 7:20 p.m.

On Saturday, the meet resumes action at 10:30 a.m. with the final field events taking place as well as the finals in 11 races.

“We are truly blessed that Shorter and Rome is hosting the NCCAA championship,” Byrd said of the meet, which is being presented by Coach O Event Management. “There are some great teams and athletes who will be competing and we know we have our work cut out for us.”

Rome to crack down on handicapped parking violations

The Latest Local News from the Rome News

Between May 4 and May 18, the Rome Police Department will be increasing enforcement of handicap parking violations throughout the City of Rome.

The maximum penalty per Georgia state law for a violation of handicapped parking space is $500 and the illegally parked vehicle can be subject to removal by tow truck at the owner’s expense.

Lt. Chris DeHart of the Selective Enforcement Unit issued the following press release Thursday night:

The Northwest Georgia Center for Independent Living and the Rome Police Department are working together during this time to educate the community on handicap parking guidelines and working towards proper compliance by all members of the community.

Since the week of April 13th, the Rome Police Department has been conducting a focused education effort on the proper posting of handicap parking notices. As part of this initiative, the Rome Police Department has been working with local businesses to raise awareness of the standards set forth in Georgia state law regarding handicap parking notices to the public.

Handicapped parking spaces are reserved for individuals with disabilities who have a handicapped license plate or handicapped accessible parking placard issued to them which is properly displayed. Failure to display the required handicapped accessible parking placard may result in a citation being issued.

Access to handicap parking provides individuals with disabilities the opportunity to travel with less difficulty and assists them in living independently.

Drivers without disabilities who park in handicapped parking interfere with handicapped parking and can be found in violation of the law. Illegal use of handicapped license tags or placards can also be a violation of the law …

The Rome Police Department wants to remind the community that handicapped parking spaces are for individuals with disabilities and should not be abused. The Rome Police Department hopes that by educating the public and raising awareness will allow better access to the designated handicapped parking spaces for residents and visitors with disabilities.

Georgia's air quality getting better, but still worrisome

The Latest Local News from the Rome News

A new report shows some improvements in ozone levels in metro Atlanta and in Macon, though both areas still have significant air quality problems.

The American Lung Association’s “State of the Air 2015” report, released Wednesday, gave a failing grade on ozone to six Georgia counties: Cobb, DeKalb, Fulton, Gwinnett, Henry and Rockdale. All are in metro Atlanta.

Click here to see the report concerning Floyd County.

The report, which covers data from 2011, 2012 and 2013, gave Bibb County (where Macon is located) a D on ozone. The Macon/Warner Robins area was ranked 20th among U.S. cities with the highest year-round particle pollution.

“We saw improvement,’’ said June Deen, with the Lung Association in Georgia. “It’s not a vast improvement.”

Georgia has made progress on air pollution since the first State of the Air report 16 years ago, Deen said. “There’s still a lot of work to be done to make our air healthy for all of us to breathe.”

Georgia counties getting A’s for ozone levels were Chatham and Glynn along the coast; Chattooga in northwest Georgia; Muscogee (the Columbus area); Coweta, south of Atlanta; Dawson, north of Atlanta; and Sumter in South Georgia. Among the cleanest U.S. cities for ozone were Brunswick, Savannah/Hinesville/ Statesboro, Rome/Summerville, and Bainbridge.

The coastal areas of Georgia benefit from Atlantic air currents that can help disperse pollutants, Deen said Thursday.

Ozone and particle pollution, or soot, are the most widespread air pollutants and among the most dangerous. Ground-level ozone, a main ingredient of smog, has harmful effects, especially on children, older adults, people with respiratory illnesses, and those who work outdoors.

Ozone, a variant of oxygen, plays a necessary role in the upper reaches of the atmosphere but is unhealthy for living creatures. At ground level, it is created by the reaction of sunlight on emissions from vehicles and other sources.

Young Women looking at cityscape.

Metro Atlanta air pollution problems stem from population growth, traffic congestion, and “a lack of a large transit system,’’ Deen said. The Metropolitan Atlanta Rapid Transit Authority (MARTA) has a relatively large ridership but operates in only a few of the region’s counties.

Exposure to particles can increase the risk of hospitalization for asthma, damage to the lungs, lung cancer and premature death.

Metro Atlanta “is the place to worry about’’ in Georgia, said Barry Ryan, an environmental health professor at Emory University. “We’re not as bad as Los Angeles or Houston, or some places in the Northeast during summer.”

“We’ve gotten better over the last 15 to 20 years,’’ Ryan said Thursday.

But he noted that Atlanta and the South in general tend to have ozone problems due to more sunlight and warmer temperatures. “Ozone is really hard to control,’’ Ryan said. “We can still crank down [ozone] a little bit here,’’ but a major reduction would be difficult to achieve, he added.

Coastal Georgia has less population and vehicle emissions, along with favorable air currents, Ryan said.

Deen noted that there was a glitch in the EPA’s data-gathering on particle pollution in the metro Atlanta area, largely due to the impact a winter storm in January 2011 had on monitoring sites and laboratories.

Nationally, the Lung Association report found mixed progress on air quality. Many cities experienced strong improvement, while others suffered worse episodes of unhealthy air. Nearly 138.5 million people — almost 44 percent of the nation — live where pollution levels are too often dangerous to breathe, the report said.

The improvements in air pollution stem from the implementation of the Clean Air Act during the Nixon administration more than 40 years ago, Deen said. That has led to cleaner diesel and other fuels, along with cleaner power plants, she said.

She also said more alternative sources of power are being used. Georgia’s Legislature this year passed a bill making it easier and more affordable for Georgia homeowners and small businesses to put solar panels on their rooftops.

But she noted the General Assembly also eliminated tax breaks for the purchase of electric cars. It also added a $200 annual registration fee on all alternative-fuel vehicles.

“That was a real blow,’’ Deen said, “and short-sighted.”
