Softball: Berry to open play Friday in NCAA tourney

The Latest Local News from the Rome News

The Berry College softball team has been selected to compete in the NCAA Division III softball championship. The 62-team field was announced Monday morning.

The Vikings earned an at-large bid to the tournament and will open with Averett (34-3-1) — at host Emory — on Friday.

Berry (32-6) has won 13 straight games and captured the Southern Athletic Association regular season and tournament titles.

The SAA does not yet have an automatic qualifier and the Vikings were selected as a pool B team. Emory was the other pool B selection. Emory (31-7) will take on LaGrange (25-14) in the other first-round matchup Friday.

The winner of the Atlanta four-team/double elimination bracket will advance to next weekend’s Super Regionals against the University of Texas at Tyler subregional winner.

“Since we started the program, it’s been a goal to reach the national tournament,” said Vikings’ head coach Cori Thiermann. “We are excited and it’s well-deserved because this team plays hard and with heart. We are peaking at the right time, which is great. And while we are happy to be going to our first regionals, we want to have a great weekend and think we can compete with anyone.”
