Cedar & Smoke takes shape in Cedartown

Cedar and Smoke, the much-anticipated new restaurant under construction on Herbert Street in downtown Cedartown, is slowly wending its way to an opening date in early summer.

Allen Casey, who is the son of the restaurant owners, Jackie and Cindy Casey, will be the new restaurant’s chef. He said Monday that the weather has slowed things down some, but they are still working toward a June opening.

As of Friday morning, the front facade was framed in with large windows looking out of the interior dining area. Elegant features of the original building, including ornately sculpted capitals atop the supporting columns, will remain.

Inside, Andy Marlowe of Tri-County Painting was preparing the floor for a glazed concrete treatment that will resemble Roman slate. The outlines of the outdoor dining area, which will run parallel to the building on the street side, was also coming into focus.

Marlowe said they would give the outdoor dining area the same glazed concrete floor treatment as inside. “It’s going to be a beautiful building,” he said.

The smoker will be placed outside in a screened porch coming off the kitchen and adjacent to the outdoor dining area.

The restaurant cleared three important bureaucratic hurdles this month:

The Cedartown Downtown Association put its stamp of approval on the color scheme of rust brown and a buttery-beige for the exterior portions of the building that will be painted (a large portion of the building will remain brick.)

The Association also approved a $3,000 grant to be used towards restoration of the east and north facades of the restaurant. The facade grants are part of the incentive package the association provides to prospective buyers and restorers of buildings purchased downtown.

Another piece of the puzzle clicked into place for the Caseys earlier this month when the city commission approved a deed allowing the restaurant to use a small grassy strip of land on Herbert Street owned by the city.

The strip of land runs is about 35 feet wide and runs along the length of the side of the building facing Philpot Street. The deeding of the strip to the restaurant will allow for construction of the outdoor dining area.
