A grand jury indicted former Polk County coroner Trey Litesey Tuesday on two felony charges connected with an August 2014 theft.
According to a release from Tallapoosa Circuit District Attorney Jack Browning:
The grand jury returned a true bill of indictment against former coroner Lester C. “Trey” Litesey on felony charges of theft by taking and violation of oath of public officer.
The case was initiated in August 2014, following a report to Polk County Police Chief Kenny Dodd from one of his officers about missing funds at a death scene. Dodd contacted the Georgia Bureau of Investigation to look into actions of Litesey and all the police officers, emergency medical personnel and firefighters who responded to the call.
Litesey resigned in September, citing personal reasons.
Litesey turned himself in Tuesday evening at the Polk County Jail and was released on a $10,000 bond, according to Sheriff Johnny Moats. The bond had been set before Litesey turned himself in, according to Browning’s statement.
