Marvel sets test of fandom: Locals ready for challenge of 29-hour movie marathon

The Latest Local News from the Rome News

Despite the feedback some die-hard local movie lovers are getting, super powers are not required to sit through 11 films in the span of 29 hours.

But they couldn’t hurt.

A limited number of movie theaters across the nation will present just such an event, beginning April 29 as the Ultimate Marvel Marathon .

The $65 ticket provides a chance to see each Marvel comic book film beginning with 2008’s “Iron Man.” It all leads up to the highly-anticipated “Avengers: Age of Ultron,” which caps off the marathon on the night of April 30 — a day before its official release.

It was an automatic response for Cedartown’s Alejandra Cendejas to immediately purchase a ticket to the showing at Regal Atlantic Station 16 in Atlanta when she found out about it.

“As soon as I bought my ticket I started texting all of my friends,” Cendejas said. “Everybody said I was crazy and they keep trying to talk me out of it, but I’ve got to do this. I want to do this for the experience.”

Despite initial questions about when she would eat or go to the restroom, some of Cendejas’ friends are now saying they are willing to go with her.

“I joke around and say that I’ll just starve and hold it in,” Cendejas said, adding that she has seen most of the movies that will be showing so slipping out for breaks won’t be a problem.

The Regal Atlantic Station 16 is one of only eight cinemas listed as showing the marathon. The next-closest one is in Orlando, Florida.

Cendejas credits her 11-year-old brother Arturo Cendejas Jr. for getting her and her family into the Marvel movies.

“He’s into the comics and he will go and give us all this information about what’s in the movies,” she said.

“I think that’s what brings us together mostly. It’s kind of rare because we’re 10 years apart, so when you find something like this it’s just amazing.”

The continuing popularity of comic book movies has changed the way the industry looks at itself and the average fan, according to Jason LeCroy, co-owner of What If Comics and Collectables in Rome.

“It’s brought a whole new customer base in,” LeCroy said.

“Geek is kind of cool now, with shows like ‘Big Bang Theory’ and ‘King of the Nerds,’ and the movies. Even Marvel and DC have taken notice.”

Both comics publishers are getting ready to launch cross-series events in April that LeCroy said will make it easier for the fans brought in by the recent run of movies to get into the books.

“Marvel is even changing up some of their comics to be more in line with what is in the movies,” LeCroy said.

Comic book fan Shawn Astin, of Cedartown, is a customer of LeCroy’s shop, in Redmond Place shopping center, 1850 Redmond Circle . He said he is looking into going to the Atlanta marathon presentation.

“It’s a special thing for the fans,” Astin said. “To see every story unfold before the new one and how the characters have progressed … I love what Marvel is doing.”

Seeing all of the Marvel films in a theatrical setting leading up to Age of Ultron is “awesome,” LeCroy said.

“But it’s also a little crazy.”
