Alex Mitchell is named STAR Student at Coosa High

Alex Mitchell, a senior, was honored recently as the 2015 STAR student for Coosa High School. Mitchell selected Adam Daniel, band director at Coosa High, as his STAR teacher.


To be named a STAR student, a senior must have the highest SAT score in the school on one test date through November prior to graduation. The student’s SAT scores must be equal to or higher than the national average, and the senior must be in the top 10 percent or top 10 students in the senior class based on grade point average.


The STAR teacher is selected by the STAR student for having made the most significant contribution to the student’s scholastic development.


Mitchell has a 4.0 GPA, is in the National Honor Society, an AP Scholar, and participated in Governor’s Honors as a state finalist in mathematics. He earned a Georgia Certificate of Merit, excellence in AP language, the President’s Award for Outstanding Academic Excellence, and highest average in AP U.S. History.


A leader at Coosa, Mitchell participated in High School Leadership Rome, he was junior class treasurer, senior class treasurer and drama club treasurer.


Mitchell is also active in extra-curricular programs at Coosa. He is in the drama club, on the math team, Academic Decathlon team, basketball team and in the marching band. He was named most outstanding soloist at the 2014 Jacksonville State University Contest of Champions.


In the community, Mitchell is active in theater. He has appeared in Rome Little Theatre performances where his largest role was Injun Joe in “Tom Sawyer.” He has also performed in Upstagers Theatre Company. Mitchell was nominated for a Roman Award for Teen Lake Showstopper.


This has been a big year for the Mitchell family. In addition to Alex being named STAR student, his father, Roy, was named Floyd County Schools’ “Teacher of the Year” and his brother Zac won the Floyd County Schools’ Spelling Bee and has advanced to the state finals.


The STAR program has been in existence since 1958 and has recognized more than 24,000 students and teachers in Georgia. The program is sponsored locally by the Greater Rome Chamber of Commerce.
