Baseball: Berry falls at home to Transylvania. 6-2

The Latest Local News from the Rome News

Trailing from start to finish, Berry never found the touch on offense or defense before falling to Transylvania 6-2 on Saturday at William R. Bowdoin Field.

“I just don’t think we showed up ready to play,” Berry head coach David Beasley said. “When you don’t show up ready to play, you get bad first steps, you get bad reads and balls start playing us.”

While Berry’s batters couldn’t find their marks, a plethora of errors throughout the contest were the biggest detriments to the Vikings.

Berry committed five errors in the game, two coming in the critical seventh that turned a manageable two-run deficit into the 6-2 Transylvania lead the Pioneers held onto for the remainder of the game.

“It’s hard to compete with five errors,” Beasley said. “I guess my kids are on spring break.”

The Vikings had multiple chances to cut the Pioneer lead, but couldn’t find the clutch hitting Berry needed to even the score.

Down three runs in the bottom of the fourth, Ben Jernigan doubled to send Alex McGill home for Berry’s first score of the night.

Ryan Smith scored for the Vikings in the fifth off a double from Grant Perkins down the left field line, drawing within two runs following a Transylvania run in the top of the fifth.

Transylvania took control of the game in the seventh thanks to the two errors by Berry, but the Vikings had a window of hope in the bottom of the eighth with bases loaded and only one out.

Dusty Tyson walked, Alfred Francis singled on a bunt and Jernigan walked to open the door for Berry. But a strikeout by Hunter White and a fly out by Nick Stidham ended the Vikings’ best shot to cut the lead.

“We had some opportunities to get back in it,” Beasley said, “we just didn’t’ come through in those situations.”

With one last half inning in the game, Perkins grounded into a double play to end the game with the loss for the Vikings.

Despite the numbers on the scoreboard, Beasley said he was pleased with the Vikings’ pitching.

Austin Parker took the loss in four innings pitched. He struck out one batter and allowed four hits and three earned runs. Ryan O’Connell and Glen Williamson pitched two innings apiece. O’Connell allowed four hits and one run while Williamson struck out one batter and only gave up one run.

John Melson pitched in the ninth and didn’t allow any hits or runs.

“I thought we pitched pretty well, for the most part, because we only gave up six runs and we made five mistakes behind them,” Beasley said. “But the ultimate thing is we just did not show up ready to play today and that’s ultimately my fault and I take sole responsibility for our loss to Transylvania.”

McGill and Francis finished 2-for-4 from the plate for the Vikings. McGill hit a single and a double while Francis delivered two singles.

Jernigan went 1-for-3 and Perkins went 1-for-4 from the plate. Both had one double and one RBI each.

Berry (8-6) plays Transylvania (1-3) again today at home at 12 p.m.
