Baseball: Big first inning helps Rome beat Armuchee 15-0

The Latest Local News from the Rome News

An 11-run first inning propelled Rome to a 15-0 win over Armuchee in 2½ innings Friday night at Legion Field.

The Wolves scored a few different ways in the first, including off walks, wild pitches and big hits from Dylan Beasley, Connor Reed and Zach Cook.

Reed and Alan Loveman scored runs off walks to start the game for Rome, and Beasley connected on a double to send Evan Mather and Nick Kirksey home to make it a 4-0 lead.

Connor Chandler made it home off a wild pitch moments later, and scores by Beasley and Andy Mathis following a hit by Reed extended the lead to 7-0.

Zach Cook singled to send Austin Linotoc home, Reed tagged third on a flyout to score, Loveman advanced home after another walk and Cook scored off a single from Beasley to complete the 11-run inning for Rome.

“We didn’t do anything to hurt ourselves,” Rome head coach Michael Doughtery said. “We took the walks when they gave them to us and we turned around strikes when they were thrown. We did what we had to given the circumstances.”

Rome scored four more runs in the second inning.

Linotoc scored after tagging up third, Mather’s single brought Loveman home and Beasley’s single sent Mather and Kirksey home.

While the win marks Rome’s third victory this season, Doughtery said these early non-region games are more important than building a win-lose record.

The Wolves used this game, Wednesday’s win over Model and will use today’s game against Coosa to tune-up the roster and improve pitching and hitting before matching up with region schools Monday.

“With all the weather that’s come in, we knew we needed to have a three or four-game week to get our pitching set up for the region,” Doughtery said. “I think we had five different starters tonight than we had on Wednesday night. We’ve got 16-17 guys in this dugout that can help us win games and giving them time on the field, giving them quality at-bats, that’s what these non-region games are for.”

Josh Perkins got the win for the Wolves, pitching 1 1-3 innings and striking out two batters. Reed pitched the final 1 1-3, walking two and allowing only one hit.

For Armuchee, Seth Farmer took the lost in 2/3 innings pitched. Noah Heard pitched 11/3 innings and struck out one batter. Corbin Sharp hit 1-of-2 from the plate with a single for the Indians.

“Thank goodness it is just third game of the season,” Armuchee head coach David Honea said. “Obviously they (Rome) did a lot better job hitting the baseball. I feel confident that we can, just haven’t gotten there yet so we’ll just keep working hard.”

Armuchee (0-3) returns home on Tuesday to play Darlington at 5 p.m.

Beasley went 3-for-3 with two singles, a double and three RBIs. Reed hit 2-of-3 from the plate with two singles and two RBIs. Loveman went 1-for-1 with a single, Cook went 1-for-2 with a single and one RBI and Mather went 1-for-3 with a single.

“Our expectation is to win a region championship and go deep in the playoffs,” Doughtery said. “With what we have, I think we have the ability to do that.”

Rome (3-0) continues its non-region play today against Coosa at 4 p.m. The Wolves begin region play against Woodland at home on Monday at 5:55 p.m.
