Baseball: Vikings win series against Sewanee

The Berry College Vikings (11-9, 4-2 SAA) baseball team swept the visiting Sewanee Tigers (4-7, 2-7) in a 3-game SAA series this weekend. Berry won the third game on Sunday, 5-1, over the Tigers.


The Vikings struck first in the game in the third and fourth inning by tallying a run in each frame.


In the third inning, Doug Heath scored from third on a double play ball, and Ben Jernigan drove in the second run of the game with a bunt single, scoring Alfred Francis on the play.


Francis extended the lead for the Vikes in the fifth inning by knocking in a pair of runs. He f finished the game 2-for-4 with 2 runs scored.


Jernigan finished the game with two hits in four at bats, and Heath added a single while scoring two of the five Berry runs.


Austin Parker (1-1) started the game for Berry and he earned the win. Parker went three innings, allowing three hits and no runs.


Drew Mancuso and Tyler Minkkinen led the Tigers after going 2-for-4.


The Hawks dropped both games of the Gulf South Conference doubleheader with West Georgia Sunday afternoon; falling in the opener 9-5, and in the finale 8-1.


The losses move Shorter to 8-9 on the season and 5-6 in conference play; while the 21st-ranked Wolves improve to 16-6 overall and 10-4 in the GSC.


The Hawks took the lead in the opener as George Ragsdale delivered and RBI triple to plate Brian Cabrera in the first inning. West Georgia tied the game in the fourth on the first of two solo homeruns from Garrett Hayes in the game, before Shorter regained the lead in the bottom of the inning on an RBI double from Bryan Mathews.


Tyler Hutch singled for the Wolves in the fifth to tie the game once again, but the Hawks answered in the bottom of the inning as Taylor Cato brought in Cabrera and Dustin Lawson on a 2 RBI single. Hayes’ second homer of the day cut Shorter’s lead to one in the sixth, but again in the bottom of the inning the Hawks got back the advantage on a sacrifice fly from Lawson.


West Georgia then took the lead, 8-5, in the seventh as four runs scored and added a run in the ninth for the 9-5 final score.


Travis McPherson took the loss in game one; allowing seven runs on five hits with five walks and six strikeouts through 6.2 innings of work.


The Wolves jumped out to an early lead in game two; scoring four times in the second inning. It proved to be enough as they held the Hawks to one run in the game. However, in the fourth West Georgia added one run and in the fifth, three. Shorter broke the shutout in the fifth as Lawson scored on an error by the right fielder for the 8-1 final score.


Colton Cross recorded the loss for the Hawks in game two; allowing four runs on three hits with three walks and three strikeouts.
