Basketball: Chargers beat South Georgia Tech to advance to finals

Three years after beginning a basketball program, the Georgia Highlands College men secured their first berth in the NJCAA Region 17 Championship game with a 78-62 win over South Georgia Tech at South Georgia State on Friday afternoon.


South Georgia Tech entered the contest having won 14 of its last 15 contests and jumped out to an early 7-0 lead in the game.


The Chargers battled back taking their first lead at the 10-minute mark of the first half, 16-14.


The Chargers, with one second remaining on the shot clock, extended the lead to seven on Paris Ballinger’s last-second 3-pointer with 6 minutes left in the opening half.


But South Georgia battled back, and the Chargers led 35-31 at the break.


Highlands’ high-pressure defense proved to be the story of the second half, with Highlands forcing multiple turnovers leading to 19 points.


The Chargers also showed the team chemistry coach Phil Gaffney has talked about all season with Highlands’ bench outscoring South Georgia Tech’s 33-14.


Sophomore sensation Montrel Goldston led the Chargers with 20 points, freshman Paris Ballinger added 17 points and sophomore Ty Toney chipped in 11. Sophomore Terrance Thompson had a huge night coming off the bench with five points and 12 rebounds.


The Chargers (26-6) play in the NJCAA Region 17 Championship Game today against South Georgia at 2 p.m. in Waycross.
