Few taking part in Rome Operation Clean Slate amnesty program

Time is ticking away for people who want to be able to settle any overdue fines from the city of Rome without paying an extra penalty.

Rome Municipal Court’s Operation Clean Slate is happening just for the month of March and court officials said around 15 people have come in and benefitted from the amnesty program.

“It’s not really what we had hoped for, but we have two weeks left,” said Stasia Burnett, court clerk.

“On behalf of the entire court, this is really an opportunity people need to take advantage of over the next two weeks.”

Ending March 31, Operation Clean Slate applies to outstanding citations and failure-to-appear warrants issued before Dec. 31, 2014. The usual contempt fines of $100 will be waived and the warrants will be lifted with no additional fines or penalties. The court office is open Monday through Friday from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. on the first floor of the joint law enforcement center, 5 Government Plaza .

No appointment is necessary and people can pay their fines by money order, cashier’s check, cash, Visa or MasterCard.

People also may mail a cashier’s check or money order to Rome Municipal Court, 5 Government Plaza, First Floor, Rome, GA 30161. The amnesty program is the first the Rome court has offered since 2010.
