Darlington School senior Ha Dang and Model High senior Braden Gilleland were honored as the Student Teacher Achievement Recognition students for the City of Rome and Floyd County respectively Friday.
Dang and Gilleland were recognized as STAR students with the other four local high school students at the Exchange Club of Rome weekly meeting.
Dang came to Darlington from Hanoi, Vietnam two years ago and expressed a desire to go to either Cal Tech or M.I.T. to college and study either biomedical or chemical engineering. Dang said at this point that she has a full scholarship offer from Mercer University.
Dang chose Julia Dodd, a chemistry teacher at Darlington, as her STAR teacher.
Gilleland, while a student at Model, is also enrolled in the Georgia Aviation, Math, and Engineering and Science program at Middle Georgia College in Cochran.
Gilleland has been accepted at Georgia Tech and told the Exchange Club that he is waiting to hear from a half dozen other colleges. He indicated a desire to study mechanical engineering or biomedical engineering, but confessed he could ultimately study just about anything.
Gilleland chose Brian Swanagan, a math instructor now at the Floyd County College and Career Academy, as his STAR teacher.
The other STAR students honored Friday, with their STAR teachers include:
Armuchee – STAR Rachel Garland – teacher Emily Mowery
Coosa – STAR Alex Mitchell – teacher Adam Daniel
Pepperell – STAR Tyler Dobson – teacher Robert Steelnack
Rome – STAR Sonora Martinez Summers – teacher Jamie Wisner
