Rome water metering program tests accuracy of service

The Latest Local News from the Rome News

A check of about half of the large commercial water users in the city has led to an increase of about $1,300 a month in revenue to the Rome Water and Sewer Division.

Eric Lindberg, water and environmental programs administrator for the department, said they are about halfway through analyzing the meters of some 400 customers who have a two-inch line or larger.

“It makes really good business sense to do this,” Lindberg said while speaking to the city’s Water and Sewer Committee on Monday. “It’s not something that is mandated by the state yet, but we feel it is coming down the road.”

Also, an expansive downtown water main replacement project is expected to start in April, according to department Assistant Director Mike Hackett.

Crews will be putting in new, 12-inch water main that will run along West First Street from Second Avenue, across Broad Street, and along East First Street to East Sixth Avenue.

Hackett said the project will help lessen the use of the nearly 100-year-old cast iron 16-inch water main that runs under the middle of Broad Street.

Work will be done in three phases and is expected to take between eight months and a year.
