Belmont, N.C. — The Hawks fell to Belmont Abbey Wednesday afternoon on the road, 16-10.
Shorter falls to 2-5 on the year, while the Crusaders improve to 5-0.
Belmont Abbey took the lead early in the game, scoring four times in the first ten minutes of the game. Ben Janes netted the Hawks first goal of the game with 1:48 to play in the first period, and Travis Getz followed it up with a goal thirty second later to cut the Cursaders lead to 4-2 going into the second period.
In the second quarter, Belmont Abbey answered with two goals – both while man-up – to regain the four point lead. Jordan Getz then cut the advantage back to three with a goal at the 11:11 mark. The Crusaders, however, answered with three goals of their own to go up 9-3. T. Getz found the back of the net in the final minute of the period to send the Hawks into half time trailing 9-4.
The third period opened with three goals from Belmont Abbey to extend their lead to 12-4. The Getz brothers then went back to back to bring Shorter to within in six. The Crusaders followed with a goal from Riley Quinlan – his fifth of the day – to take a 13-6 lead into the final fifteen minutes.
Shorter outscored Belmont Abbey in the final period; posting four goals to the Crusader’s three. J. Getz, Alex Malinowski, Tyler Kristiansen, and Joshua Skinner each netted goals for the Hawks.
Jordan and Travis Getz led the Hawks with three goals each in the game; while Malinowski posted a goal and three assists.
JR Willers played the complete game in goal for Shorter; making 18 saves on 34 shots faced.
In total, Belmont Abbey outshot the Hawks 51-29, and held the advantage 36-29 in ground balls; while winning 17 of the 28 face-offs.
Shorter will be back in action Saturday, March 14, as they host Wingate at Ben Brady Field. The game is set to begin at 1:00pm.
