Model Middle School repeats as middle school Academic Quiz Bowl champion

Model Middle School has won the 2015 Floyd County Academic Quiz Bowl for middle schools for the second consecutive year. The Academic Quiz Bowl is a county-wide academic competition that was held at Berry College on Thursday, March 12. Coosa Middle School’s team placed second with Pepperell Middle finishing third.

Sixth, seventh, and eighth-grade gifted students from all four county middle schools take part in the Quiz Bowl. This is the thirteenth year students have competed to show their academic talent in math, literature, vocabulary, science, history and geography.

The middle school competition is also divided into grade levels with champions crowned in the sixth, seventh and eighth-grade. Model Middle School also took top honors in the sixth-grade competition, Pepperell Middle won for seventh-grade and Model Middle added the eighth-grade championship to their trophy collection for the day. The Model Middle team was led by teacher Brandi Couey.

“Developers of the program sought to provide middle school gifted students with an activity to prepare them to participate in academic competitions at the high school level and also showcase their academic talents,” stated McCall Govignon, director of advanced academic programs for Floyd County Schools.

The quiz bowl competitions were started to promote student academic growth in problem solving, critical thinking, communication skills, and advanced research skills. The activities also promote leadership and provide motivation for students to excel in academics. The Quiz Bowls are local school system events with no region or state competitions.

Model Middle School team members included:

Eighth-grade team: Ty Brock, Griffin Burgess, Kilian Chapman, Hayden Dancause, Liam Knowles, Jake Payton, Zoe Wheat

Seventh-grade team: Dawson Burnes, Dakota Chase-Brooking, Dylan Diprima, Connor Gunnell, Barton Sopata, Ethan Thomas, Daulton Waddell

Sixth-grade team: Eli Abdou, Jake Burkhalter, Colby Couch, Ben Estes, Kristina Reyes, Hayden Robinson, Tristen Sprayberry
