Police: Tannerite the source of large booms near Midway School

Floyd County police were sent to the area near Midway School Wednesday night after the 911 center got several calls around 7:15 p.m. regarding large explosions and at least one home shaking in the wake of the big booms.

According to Sgt. Rusty Williams:

Officers discovered the source of the explosions on private property at the end of McBurnett Road near the Midway Estates subdivision.

“It was somebody shooting Tannerite,” Williams said.

The Tannerite, in powder form, was attached to targets. The officer said the shooters were aiming in a safe direction and Tannerite is a legal compound.

“It’s used to give your targets a little more reaction,” Williams said. “When the bullet hits it, it gives it a bigger bang.”

No charges were filed. Williams said one person who complained about the explosions said it shook a clock off her wall. No other damages were reported
