The YMCA of Rome and Floyd County announces new board president

The Latest Local News from the Rome News

Rome, Georgia –When Ross Johnson succeeded Kevin Evans as president of the YMCA of Rome and Floyd County’s Board of Trustees, it was a historical moment for the YMCA and for the Johnson Family.

Ross is the third generation of his family to serve the Y and the third member of his family to serve as Board President. Fred Johnson, Sr. served as Board President in 1954 and was instrumental in raising money for the building that is still occupied by the YMCA today. His uncle, William Johnson, served as board president from 1964 to 1965. Fred Johnson, Jr., Ross’ father, also served on the Y board for many years.

It is this legacy that Ross credits his love for the YMCA. Ross remembers saying the Pledge of Allegiance at the flagpole in front of the Y when he was eight or nine years old. Growing up, he played basketball, learned to swim and attended camp at the Y. As an adult, his children grew up with Y programs and followed in his footsteps of sports and swim at the Y. Today, Ross visits the Y four times a week to workout and stay healthy.

“As much as I love the Y for the role it has played in my life, and the life of my family,” Ross said, “I really love the Y for the impact that it has on our community. Every one is welcome to be part of the Y and the impact the Y makes on the lives of children, adults and seniors can’t be overstated. When I am at the Y, I see the diversity of the children in Day Camp and the fun they have, I see senior adults socializing and staying active, and I see people from all walks of life and all backgrounds coming together in the community of the Y.”

Ross stated his mission as Board President this year, “is to help spread the word on the good work the Y does for the Rome community. From our annual coat drive, to BooFest and Healthy Kids Day to the Y’s promise to never turn anyone away due to the inability to pay for programs or membership. In 2014, the Y made over $200,000 of assistance available to over 2500 people through its fundraising activities.” In closing Ross says, “if you want to understand why the Y is such a special place, just go there and get involved. I promise you will love it.”
