Shorter softball splits with Emory

Atlanta — The Lady Hawks took to the field for the final non-conference matchup of the year Wednesday afternoon, earning the split with Emory University. Shorter took the opener 9-3, but fell in the finale 8-6.

Kendall Johnson put the Lady Hawks on the board in the first inning of game one, bringing in Niki Cook on an RBI single. Tori Etheridge added to it in the second, scoring on a bases loaded walk to Maggie Meacham, before Johnson made it a 6-0 game with a grand slam.

In the fourth, Johnson once again added to the lead for Shorter with an RBI double to left field.

Paige Rowland followed with a single to make it an 8-0 game. In the bottom of the inning, Emory broke the shutout with a run, and added two in the fifth for the 9-3 final score – Johnson drew a bases loaded walk for the Lady Hawks in the top of the inning.

Kalei Kimbrell earned the win for Shorter, allowing three runs on seven hits with seven strikeouts through 4.2 innings of work.

Cook scored on an error in the first inning of game two to put the Lady Hawks ahead 1-0 only to have Emory answer in the bottom of the inning with two runs; as well as, two in the second to extend their lead to 4-1.

In the third, Shorter did cut the lead to two on an RBI single from Rowland, but again the Eagles answered; this time with two in the third and one in the fourth to make it a 6-2 game.

Meacham delivered an RBI triple in the fifth, and came in to score on a ground out from Johnson to bring the score to 6-4.

In the bottom of the inning a two-run homer from Emory made it an 8-4 game. Shorter, however, mounted a comeback in their final at bat; scoring twice on RBI hits from Rowland and Bynum for the 8-6 final score.

Amanda Blanchard took the loss for the Lady Hawks, allowing six runs on nine hits through four innings of work.

Johnson went 4-for-6 at the plate with eight RBIs, including seven in game one, with three runs scored. Meacham and Rowland each also tallied four hits on the day with two and three RBIs, respectively.

Shorter will return to action for the final time during the regular season, as they travel to North Alabama for a three-game series Saturday and Sunday in Florence, Alabama.
