Shorter University literary magazine 'The Chimes' hosts 100th edition release party

Rome, Ga. — Shorter University’s literary magazine, “The Chimes,” recently recognized winners of the publication’s poetry and fiction contests during its 100th edition release party.

In the poetry division, Morgan McConnell won first place, Kenna Howell won second place and Stefanie Starkey won third place. Poetry submissions were judged by Assistant Professor of English Renee Emerson and announced by Assistant Professor of English Dr. Marcia Bost.

In the fiction category, Kendall Rosbury won first place, Leah-Joy Smith won second place and Cody Cronan won third place. The fiction submissions were judged and announced by Auburn, Ala., author and English professor Chantel Acevedo, who conducted a master class that evening and read from her own work during the release party.

In addition to the poetry and fiction awards, students were also recognized for English, Modern Languages and Liberal Arts departmental awards. The following students were presented with departmental awards:

• Sierra Anderson received the Humanities Love of Learning Award

• Sarah Geil received the Jessie Austin Award

• Courtney Liddell received the Excellence in Writing Award

• Patrick Poole received the Paulina Buhl Noble Award

• Will Wiggins received the Margaret Upshaw Whitworth English Teaching Award

• Megan Selvig won the Shorter University Award for Excellence in Literary Studies

• Leah-Joy Smith received the Thelma Hall Creative Writing Award

• Angelica Aranda received the Loren Wilson Hall Award

• Julian Duncan received the French Award

• Jena Lane received the Spanish Award

• Ane Schumann received the Gussman Foreign Language Scholarship and German Award

Shorter University students Meredith Howard, Leah-Joy Smith, Jamison Sailors, Morgan McConnell, Stefanie Starkey, Ryan Baird, Courtney Liddell and Assistant Professor of English Dr. Marcia Bost also read their selections from the literary magazine during the release party.
