Rome, Augusta split doubleheader at State Mutual Stadium

The Rome Braves and Augusta GreenJackets split a doubleheader Friday night at State Mutual Stadium before a crowd of 2,791. Augusta won the first game, 6-1, and Rome bounced back to take the nightcap, 9-6.

Game 1 started with Rome taking a 1-0 lead in the first inning on a Jordan Edgerton RBI double.

The GreenJackets tied the game in the third when Will Callaway tripled home a run. In the fifth inning, Augusta pushed five runs across the plate to take the lead for good.

John Riley homered to start the inning, Andrew Cain scored on a balk, Skyler Ewing was hit by a pitch to force a run home, and Jonah Arenado added a two-run single.

Mark Reyes earned the win (1-0), while Rome starter Ricardo Sanchez was tagged with the loss. The second game saw four lead changes.

Augusta took a 2-0 advantage with single runs in the second and fifth innings but Rome jumped on top in the bottom of the fifth with five runs.

Omar Obregon singled home a run, Joseph Daris added an RBI groundout, Keith Curcio singled in a run, and two wild pitches each scored a run giving Rome the 5-2 lead.

Augusta fought back with four runs in the sixth but the Rome offense never slowed down and posted four runs in the bottom of the inning highlighted by a two-run single by Obregon, and a two-RBI triple by Daris to give the Braves the 9-6 victory.

Jorge Zavala (1-0) got the win while Raymundo Montero (0-2) took the loss.

Kyle Kinman (1) picked up the save.

The Braves and GreenJackets play at 6 p.m. today.
