Rome Tennis Academy to celebrate year of success

The Latest Local News from the Rome News

The Rome Tennis Academy will celebrate its one year anniversary at the Rome-Floyd Tennis Center on Friday, April 24, birthday party-style.

The birthday party will take place at the Center located at 301 West Third St. from 5:30 p.m. – 7:00 p.m. The event is free and open to all kids who have participated in the Tennis Academy, and party-goers will enjoy a fun afternoon of tennis activities, matches, and tennis-related contests.

David Araiza, Tennis Coordinator for the Rome-Floyd Parks and Recreation Authority, worked to establish the Academy after recognizing a local need for the sport.

“There was very little to no tennis activity,” Araiza explained. “The academy started so that we could develop a path for kids from recreational tennis all the way to forming competitive junior players that eventually will end up earning a college tennis scholarship, or even better, become tennis pro’s.”

The Academy, Araiza said, has become a hit among kids and parents alike who enjoy tennis throughout the seasons.

“We have seen a lot more retention of kids in the last few months, than when we first started,” he said. “We also had to educate parents that tennis is not only a spring and summer sport, but it is a year-round activity.”

Noting that there has been a decline in tennis throughout Rome – and nationally – over the past 10 years, Araiza said the Tennis Academy helps to pique interest in the sport and allows kids to hone their tennis skills.

“I believe that starting kids at a young age playing tennis, even if they don’t end up playing competitively, will help ensure an interest in it when they become young adults. Hopefully, they will still be involved in tennis at a recreational league level.”
