Rome police officer David McGuire admitted he was caught by surprise when he realized what was happening at Monday’s City Commission meeting.
But he appeared calm, standing in front of his fellow officers and family as he was revealed as the agency’s 2014 Officer of the Year.
“I was shocked and excited,” McGuire said of the moment.
McGuire was honored for his actions during a domestic incident last summer that saw him talk a man down from holding his family inside of their home.
“I didn’t think much of it at the time,” McGuire said. “The night it happened, I was just doing my job.”
City Commissioner Buzz Wachsteter, who serves as chair of the Public Safety Committee, read a proclamation recognizing McGuire’s actions.
On July 11, 2014, McGuire, along with fellow officers, responded to a call involving a man with access to firearms inside a residence.
He allegedly threatened to harm himself and would not let his family leave.
According to the proclamation presented at Monday’s meeting, McGuire was able to safely move to a closed window in the carport of the house and talk to the man.
Eventually, McGuire convinced the man to open the door and allow officers inside. McGuire continued to talk to the man, who peacefully left the residence and was taken to a local hospital for an evaluation.
“Because of PFC McGuire’s quick actions, professionalism and negotiating skills, this incident was resolved quickly and without any injuries,” the proclamation reads.
Police Chief Elaine Snow said McGuire exhibited qualities they strive for in all of their officers.
“While the situation was volatile and could have become violent, officer McGuire was able to use his training to bring about a resolution that was in everyone’s best interest,” Snow said.
The City Commission also recognized Mina Coleman and Sue West as the police department’s civilian employees of the year.
