Overcast skies and a slight breeze couldn’t dampen the spirits of volunteers Friday afternoon preparing for the annual Chieftains Herb and Plant Sale at the Coosa Valley Fairgrounds.
The sale begins at 8 a.m. today at the fairgrounds on Martin Luther King Jr. Boulevard and volunteers noted people wanting to buy plants might need to arrive early to get the best selection.
Rows and rows of plants, ranging from flowers to herbs to succulents to native species and many more, had workers fussing over their placement and potting in preparation.
“It’s definitely the busiest day,” Heather Shores, Chieftains Museum director, said of today, pointing to the abundance of potted vegetation.
The sale runs until 4 p.m. today and from noon until 3 p.m. on Sunday. Proceeds benefit the museum.
Shores said volunteers have been working on the event all year.
“We’ll start working on next year’s the minute we sell the last plant from this year,” she said. “It’s a year-round event, and we have so many volunteers doing so many things. We’ve had people out here since Wednesday setting everything up.”
With so many plants to choose from the scene seems a bit overwhelming, but the volunteers offer smiles and are ready to help anyone who needs it.
“We’re going to have master gardeners out here to answers questions, and we’ve tried to set up to where we have plants that do well in the shade on one side and plants that do well in the sun on another,” Susan Hortman said. “We have people to answer questions and even people to help bring plants to you car.”
Hortman said there are four different colors of butterfly bush available and a carnivorous pitcher plant can also be purchased.
“We have a whole section of native plants as well,” Shores said. “We have some plants that have been around since the time of the Cherokee.”
The sale also features pottery from Hewell’s Pottery in Georgia and several garden art pieces from DIGS as well.
Credit cards, debit cards, checks and cash will be accepted.
