The Latest Local News from the Rome News

Berry College’s men’s golf team recorded a 296 on the first day of the Emory Spring Invitational on Monday. The Vikings are in second place out of a 13-team field.

Drew Kosko and Tommy McCloskey shot a minus-1, 71 total and are tied for second place. The duo trails Guilford’s Andrew Thompson by 1 stroke.

Kosko started with a 34 as Berry played the back nine of the Barnsley Gardens Course first. He had 3 birdies in his first 9 holes and four for his entire round. McCloskey carded three birdies and just 2 bogeys on his round.

The Vikings’ plus-8 team total trails only Methodist University. The Monarchs fired a 294 and hold a two-shot edge on Berry. The Vikes lead third place Guilford by five strokes.

“The guys played one of their cleaner rounds today at Barnsley,” said Viking head coach Brian Farrer. “Having Tommy and Drew post rounds under par was very important. I look forward to seeing what tomorrow brings.”
