Hawks earn walk-off win over Georgia Southwestern

The Hawks topped Georgia Southwestern 12-10 Wednesday afternoon thanks to a walk-off home run from George Ragsdale.

Shorter (14-15) jumped out to an early lead, scoring in the first inning on an RBI single from Ragsdale.

The Hawks added to it in the fourth on a two-run homer from Ian Redetzky.

In the sixth, the Hawks used five hits to score four runs to add to the advantage and take the lead, 7-0, only to have the Hurricanes answer in the seventh with five runs.

But, the Hawks kept the momentum, adding three runs in the eighth to make it a 10-5 game.

Georgia Southwestern (11-25) tied things up in the top of the ninth, as Brandon Reynolds walked all four of the batters he faced, and Brantley Flanagan gave up a grand slam to Paul Sorrow.

Flanagan then went on to retire the side without any further damage, and the Hawks earned the win on the home run.

In the bottom of the inning, the Hurricanes recorded the first two outs in order, Taylor Cato then reached on a single to center field and Ragsdale notched the two-run homer to left center to give the Hawks the win, 12-10.

Flanagan recorded the win, despite giving up the hit to bring in the tying runs.

In one inning of work, he allowed one hit and was tagged with one run.

Justin Machado started the game for Shorter, pitching 6.1 innings, allowing two runs on four hits with three strikeouts.

In total, the Hawks recorded 20 hits in the win. Ragsdale finished the day with four – going 4-for-6 at the plate.

Both Cato and Patrick Sanderson recorded three hits. Redetzky, Dustin Lawson, Bryan Mathews and Brian Cabrera each turned in two hits.

Shorter will be back in action in the final weekend series of the year at the Robert H. Ledbetter Baseball Complex as they host Gulf South Conference foe, West Florida.

Senior day is set for Saturday afternoon, with recognition being held between games. The doubleheader will begin at 1 p.m. Sunday’s single game finale will also begin at 1.
