With the regular season coming to an end the NCAA announced its first installment of regional softball rankings Wednesday afternoon with Shorter coming in as the South Region’s fifth ranked team.
The Lady Hawks enter the final week of the regular season with a 27-10 overall record, a 17-9 conference mark, and confirmed spot in the GSC Tournament.
Topping the list for the region was fellow Gulf South Conference rival and current national No. 1, Valdosta State. Also making the list from the GSC was North Alabama, Alabama Huntsville, and Union. UNA, who holds the 13th spot in the national rankings, ranked second in the region. No. 11 UAH came in just above the Lady Hawks in fourth, and Union rounded out the top ten – securing the final spot.
Completing the list were five teams from the Sunshine States Conference with Rollins earning the highest spot at three. Florida Tech, Tampa, Saint Leo, and Barry ranked 6th, 7th, 8th, and 9th, respectively.
Shorter will begin the final week of the regular season at Delta State this weekend for a three game, GSC series; before travelling to Young Harris for a midweek doubleheader Wednesday, April 22, and visiting North Alabama for the final GSC matchup of the year next weekend.
The NCAA will release two more regional rankings, both on Wednesday, scheduled for the 22nd and the 29th, ahead of the selection shows scheduled at the completion of conference tournaments.
