Berry College forensics team competes in national tournament

ROME, Ga. — The Berry College forensics team finished sixth at the recent Novice Nationals competition in Indianapolis with three students finishing in the top five.


Berry’s Forensic Union is a competitive speech organization that fosters the enhancement of communication skills through practice in public speaking. Novice Nationals is a three-day competition held this year at Butler University in Indiana. For this tournament, only students who have less than a year of collegiate forensics experience are eligible to compete. Once there, students have the chance to compete against competitors from 29 different colleges and universities.


Berry freshman Olivia Vasquez, of Grovetown, Ga., placed second in Pentathlon, fourth in Slam Poetry and Rhetorical Criticism. Junior Nicky McHugh, of Alpharetta , Ga., took third place in in Slam Poetry and the Pentathlon along with second in Public Narrative. Freshman Davidson Mobley, of Bogart, Ga., finished fourth place in the Pentathlon, sixth in Impromptu and was a semi-finalist in Prose Interpretation. These three along with freshman Kristian Willingham, of Trion, Ga., won second place in Readers Theater for a performance entitled “A Celebration of Mediocrity.” Freshman Ethan Hart, of Chatsworth Ga., brought home the sixth place medal in the Public Narrative category.


The National Forensics Association Nationals, a completion for both novice and varsity competitors, will be held April 16-20 in Athens, Ohio. Berry’s forensics team has three competitors who will compete.
