Rome Mayor Jamie Doss visits Unity Christian School

The Latest Local News from the Rome News

The Young Americans for Freedom student chapter at Unity Christian School hosted Mayor Jamie Doss for a lunch time question and answer time on Tuesday.

Students had the opportunity to learn about the workings of local government and ask the Mayor questions about his responsibilities and the important functions of the city commissioners. The students also took advantage of their time with the Mayor to relate to his personal experience as a lifelong Roman, successful business man, and political leader in the community.

According to Carson Earnest, a sophomore at Unity, “We invited Mr. Doss to speak at Unity because we thought that it would be interesting to learn more about what was going on in Rome and its government. We also wanted to learn about things we could do as students to help our community. Personally, I enjoyed hearing stories about local government and how it compares to what we see happening nationally.”

Hannah Payne, a sophomore and founder of the student chapter at Unity said, Young Americans for Freedom is a project of the Young America’s Foundation. It is a program for students that believe in conservative values in government and want to promote those values in their school. As students, we can be advocates for ideas such as limited government, individual freedom and free enterprise.”

“We hear and study a lot about the national government but not a lot about the local government. We thought it would be good to hear that perspective and how local government works. It was even more interesting for us to hear the information directly from our own mayor.”

The experience was also personally rewarding for Mayor Doss. “It is an honor and privilege to interact with local students in this way. It’s one of the benefits of being in this leadership position. Their curiosity and excitement encourages me. Based on what I see in them, we have much to look forward to in Rome.”

I believe that it is important for us to invest in our future leaders. It’s important for them to see us face to face and hear just how much we care about them, their future, and the future of our great city.”

The members of the Young Americans for Freedom student chapter at Unity Christian School have been busy in their effort to promote the cause of conservative values in government. In addition to hosting the mayor on campus, the students are also hosting Rafael Bienvenido Cruz, Cuban immigrant and father of Senator Ted Cruz in a school assembly April 13th.
