Shorter University’s Robert H. Ledbetter College of Business honors students

Rome, Ga. — Shorter University business majors were honored on Monday during the Robert H. Ledbetter College of Business’s annual Awards Ceremony.


Sixteen business majors were inducted into Sigma Beta Delta. The business honor society encourages and recognizes scholarship and achievement among business, management, and administration students. It serves to encourage and promote personal and professional improvement and a life distinguished by honorable service to humankind, according to the organization’s website.


Students must rank in the top 20 percent of their class and be invited to membership by faculty officers before being inducted into the honor society.


The newest members of the Ledbetter College of Business’s chapter of Sigma Beta Delta are: Laura Ayres, of Flintstone, Ga.; Beth Ann Blankenship, of Norman, Okla.; Lorrie Bunch, of Calhoun, Ga.; Andrew Chastain, of Calhoun, Ga.; Darcy Criollo, of Rome; Ansley Dupree of Kingston, Ga.; Miranda Forte, of Germantown, Md.; Brien Lancaster, of Wilmington, N.C.; John Martin, of Buford, Ga.; Marcus (Lee) McDowell Jr., of Cedartown, Ga.; Perry (Brice) Prather, of LaGrange, Ga.; Hannah Reeves, of Cumming, Ga.; Amanda Schwartz, of Ispringen, Germany; Maggie Sheffield, of McDonough, Ga.; Jonas Uhlhorn, of Homberg, Germany; and Austin Wofford, of Cedar Bluff, Ala.


“Membership in Sigma Beta Delta is the highest national recognition a business student can receive at a college or university with a Sigma Beta Delta chapter,” Dean of the Ledbetter College of Business Dr. Melissa Hickman said. “I am especially proud of these students who demonstrate a commitment to education and the University. These individuals are leaders in the College who will continue to make a difference in the world by leading a life ‘for the greater glory of God.’”


In addition to the induction ceremony, other awards and scholarships were presented during the Ledbetter College of Business Awards Ceremony.


Stephen Corasaniti, of Athens, Ga., and Kelsi Jones, of Oakwood, Ga., each received the Freshman Achievement Award. This award is given by the Ledbetter College of Business faculty to honor outstanding freshmen.


Amanda Blanchard, of Royal Palm Beach, Fla., and Will Miller, of Warrior, Ala., each received the Sophomore Achievement Award. This award is given by the Ledbetter College of Business faculty to honor outstanding sophomores majoring in Accounting, Business Administration or Economics.


Augusto Barreto, of Belo Horizonte, Brazil, and Laura Ayres, of Flintstone, Ga., were each presented the Charles C. Thompson Award. Given by the College of Business in memory of Charles C. Thompson, who was an associate professor of economics and business administration from 1966 to 1971, this award is given to outstanding juniors.


Amanda Schwartz, of Ispringen, Germany, received the Coca-Cola Achievement Award. Established by the Coca-Cola Foundation to provide scholarships for business students, this award is given to the rising senior, who, in the opinion of the faculty, demonstrates hard work and persistence in their academic pursuits.


Iegor Santos, of Londrina, Brazil, received the Senior Accounting Scholarship. The $1,200 scholarship is given by the Rome Chapter of the Georgia Society of Certified Public Accountants to honor an outstanding rising senior in Accounting.


Thomas Tourinho, of Nora Friburgo, Brazil, received the Leighton Richardson Award. This award is given to an outstanding senior in Business or Economics by Fuller E. Callaway Professor of Economics Dr. Greg Richardson and his family in memory of Dr. Richardson’s father.


Darcy Criollo, of Rome, received the Corinne U. Jordan Memorial Scholarship. The $500 scholarship recognizes a student who demonstrates academic excellence while pursuing a major in the field of business. The scholarship was established in memory of Corinne Jordan, who died in June 2003. Jordan completed her academic coursework in Accounting at Shorter and was employed as a CPA at Ernest J. Rudert & Company in Rome.


Miles Mendiola, of Frederick, Md., received the Travis Williams Scholarship. The $2,600 scholarship is given in memory of Travis Williams, who was a rising Shorter senior when he passed away in 1998. This scholarship is given to a rising senior majoring in Business who exhibits the characteristics Williams lived.


Dustin Hayes, of Rome, received the Live Like Shane Award. This award is given in honor of Shane Richardson, who died in 2010 after battling cancer. The award is presented to an individual who works hard in all they do and who lives his or her life to honor and glorify God.


Blake Selland, of Charlotte, N.C., received the Heart of the College of Business Administration Award. This award is given by the College of Business faculty to the student who makes teaching and learning fun and who, in the opinion of faculty, exhibits a love for life.


Hannah Green, of Calhoun, Ga., received the Dean’s Award. This award is presented to the student who best exemplifies the principles for which the Ledbetter College of Business stands.


Sixto Moraga, of Rome, received the Certificate of Excellence from the Georgia Society of CPAs. This award is given to an outstanding graduating senior Accounting major.
