The Latest Local News from the Rome News

Rome, Ga. — The Shorter University Symphonic Winds will present a concert on Monday, April 13 at 7:30 p.m. at the Rome City Auditorium. Admission is free and open to the public.

The evening’s program, directed by Shorter University Director of Bands Elizabeth E. Taylor, is titled “Journeys.” The pieces selected for the program each have a suggestion of travel and fit the theme of destinations.

Several Shorter University students will be featured throughout the concert. Junior instrumental music education majors Clay Mayben, of Rockmart, Ga., and Tina Henderson, of Homerville, Ga., will conduct the band during the course of the program, and saxophone soloist Tyler Merritt, of Waycross, Ga., will be featured in the opening piece titled “Ride,” by Samuel R. Hazo.

The newly formed Shorter University Hilltop Jazz Band will be featured on several selections as well.

Taylor said that she believes the audience will connect with the literature selected for the concert.

“It is very diverse and entertaining,” she said. “Our students have been working extremely hard to prepare for Monday evening, and I am really looking forward to it!”
